Sri Lanka's Second Highest Mountain – Kirigalpoththa
Route: Kandy ▶️ Pattipola ▶️ Horton Plains
Total Distance: 14 km
An entry permit must be purchased at the Horton Plains entrance.
As this mountain trail runs through a forest reserve, during the hike you’ll experience grasslands, muddy patches, streams, misty forest trails, and rapidly changing weather conditions.
The trail passes through the Mahaeliya Plains, a paradise for sambars (wild deer), and you’ll frequently spot wildlife and scenic views along the way.
Camping on the summit is strictly prohibited due to the lack of suitable flat ground and the presence of strong winds.
The most recommended periods for this hike are from February to April and July to September.
P.S. Only fools feed sambars – because sambars eat only what sambars are meant to eat 🙂
